la clase de español

okay, first of all, let me thank jess (one of my fabulous college roommies and friend for life) for understanding my pain. jess sent me an email telling me that me being stuck in this basic spanish class is all my mother´s fault for not teaching me spanish when i was a child. jess loves and respects my mother, but she is absolutely right and is allowed to say such things because her father (born and raised in Colombia) did the same to her. oh Jess...from pretty plus to our lack of spanish...what tortured children we were!!

i don´t have much time left on the computer, so let´s see how many highlights from my class i can fit in to this blog.

on the first day, we learned to conjugate verbs. uh huh...for those of you who´ve taken spanish, you know my pain. yo hablo, tú hablas, ella habla, nosotros hablamos, vosotros habláis, ellos hablan. good grief. on day two, we learned to tell time. it was on this day that i really knew i wasn´t going to get a lot out of this class.

but despite the basics, it was a good brush up on vocabulary and it was also good to be forced to listen to someone speak spanish for four hours straight and have to try and understand them. and i must say, i did pretty well!

the class had a total of nine people in it, and i was one of two americans. everyone else hailed from around the world (brazil, france, norway, germany, lestonia and iceland), but the one thing they all had in common was that they all spoke english. what´s wrong with our country that we don´t learn to speak another language??

the people were all very nice, but the highlight was that the people from iceland were an older couple (probably in their seventies). they didn´t sit next to each other, but when one would struggle with understanding something, the other would help them. but the whole conversation would take place in icelandic. we would all stand there (including the teacher) until they were finished. it was extremely endearing!
